Threat Turned Into a Nuisance

March 24, 2008: So far this year, over 2,300 LTTE fighters, and nearly 150 soldiers have died. The army attacks are capturing LTTE fortifications, and taking villages back from the rebels. The army is planning on recovering all LTTE territory in the north by the end of the year. To that end, more troops and special police are being moved from former LTTE territory in eastern Sri Lanka, to the north. The eastern areas still have some LTTE fighters wandering around, but they are more a nuisance than a threat.

The air force has managed to overcome the loss of its maritime patrol aircraft, and its radar, to an LTTE raid late last year. The growing number of captured LTTE fighters has provided location information on many LTTE installations in the north. The air force is confirming these locations and bombing them. This included a recent attack that destroyed an LTTE radar station on the north coast. For over a decade, the LTTE has been using portable radar stations along the coast, to coordinate the movement of its smuggling boats, and to keep an eye out of navy patrol boats.

March 23, 2008:  An Israeli made Dvora class patrol boat was sunk by an LTTE naval mine off the north east coast. The LTTE denies using mines, and says their commandoes attacked and destroyed the boat. Two years ago, the LTTE said it was going to use magnetic mines (which lie on the bottom, in shallow water, and go off when the metal of a boat is detected overhead), but nothing ever came of it. It's also possible that LTTE scuba divers attached explosives to the side of the navy patrol boat. At least six of the 14 sailors on board survived, so it's likely the real reason will be uncovered. The navy has about fifty patrol boats, of which the 80 foot long Dvoras are the most effective. Another Dvora was lost to LTTE suicide bombers two years ago.

If as the Government of Sri Lanka claims, 2,300 LTTE fighters have been killed, then there are only about 700 rebels are left behind according to the government estimation. LTTE is doomed. Then why continue the war? 2300 is a boloated figure, all suspect.
taking villages back from the rebels?? Even the GOSL has not said so? They say they are taking FDLs & bunkers? Are you able to name a few villages? one may be?
If LTTE has been reduced to nuisance then it is time for Sri Lanka to make peace with The Tamils.
We expect immediate political process.
no more war!!!

Peaceful non-violent actions of Tamil people and their democratice parties were brutally broken up by the governments of Ceylon and later Sri Lanka.
Pacts signed by sinhala leaders and Tamil parties were treacherously torn by the sinhala leaders.
Tamil Students embarked in nonviolen struggle like black flag hoisting, staging demonstrations were accused of political crimes, arrested, tortured and thrown in jails for years without any hearings.
This is the true Hisotry.
The then almighty President JR Jeyawardena declared if Tamils want Peace, I will give them peace. They want war then War I will give.
Tamils want dignified life of freedom.
The Sinhala Nationalism is unable to accept this fact. They wanto to have the Tamils a subjugated, second class citizens.
No one in the world respecting Humanity, freedom, Fraternity & real peace cannot accept this.
That is why lately so many Sinha Tigers are on the prowl as well as white tigers.

Rajiv, influenced by the RAW, wanted the LTTE to be only an instrument of India in keeping Sri Lanka under their control. LTTE wanted only a peaceful existence of Tamils and Sinhalese in two different states in one island.
That did not fit in RAW's plans. War against LTTE in the name of peace making. More than 17000 innocent Tamils including women & children and whole villages were wiped out by IPKF on Rajivs orders.

Rather than being eliminated, Tamil race will fight to exist using any tool against such a terroist state.

I gather from your answer that the LTTE claims to speak for all Tamils, although you avoided confirming in plain language what it is the Tamil children forced to fight by the LTTE want.  Nor have you commented on the desire of Tamil civilians murdered by the LTTE, including elected Tamil politicians.

By its actions the LTTE has created for itself an intractable credibility problem.  By waging a terror campaign against fellow Tamils as well as other groups, the LTTE has created for itself a reputation as a rogue element with no interest in "a dignified life of freedom" for Tamils as you so claim.  By abandoning peace negotiations, many within Sri Lanka and abroad have now come to the conclusion that there is no path to peace with the LTTE other than the surrender or annihilation of its leaders.
