August 30, 2009: The government believes the LTTE has been crippled, with the capture of their new leader, Selvarajah Pathmanathan. This was because Pathmanathan, as leader of the LTTE gunrunning operation, kept many operational details and contacts to himself. Any successor will have to rebuild much of the organization without that knowledge. Pathmanathan also controlled a lot of the money collected from expatriate Tamils, and now those contributions have dried up (partly because the LTTE has been declared a terrorist group in so many nations). The government is negotiating with Pathmanathan to find out where the remaining funds are, and what shape the offshore LTTE organization is in. While many Sri Lankans want Pathmanathan executed, or jailed for life, Pathmanathan is a skilled negotiator who is intent on talking his way out of a death sentence.

Pathmanathan also has information on the organization that only the senior leadership had. He is able to let the government know how large the organization was in Sri Lanka before the final offensive, that ended the war, began last year. There were 30,000 LTTE members back then. Not all were armed, but all were organized, and the army captured lots of records listing who they are. Most of these LTTE staff survived the final campaign, and the government is looking for them. These are the people who could rebuild the LTTE, and who are even now trying to carry out terror attacks.

The government is pretty angry at the criticism it gets by European and American politicians and media, over the treatment of the northern Tamils. Many prominent Europeans want the Tamils in refugee camps released immediately, and Sri Lankan security forces prosecuted for war crimes. This sort of thing enrages the Sinhalese majority in Sri Lanka, and results in accusations that these foreign critics are a bunch of pro-terrorist, delusional, racists (who imply that the Sri Lankans cannot govern themselves).  India, the original home of the Tamils (who are a minority there, comprising only about six percent of the population), is much more sympathetic to the Sri Lankan government. Partly, this is to keep the Chinese out (who are offering all manner of attractive commercial deals to Sri Lanka at the moment). But India knows all about fanatical sects and political movements, and was also subject to LTTE terrorism. Europe wasn’t, and doesn't understand. Thus the camps will only be closed when all the LTTE members inside them are identified, and no sooner.

Meanwhile, some atrocities have taken place, but often against Sri Lankans who don't get along with the police. Over more than two decades of terrorism and violence, the national police have acquired an attitude that they are above the law. Cross the cops, and you end up dead, or maybe just beaten, or crippled. To show you a lesson. Popular anger against this sort of thing has been building for some time, and politicians realized that they could no longer get away with not dealing with it. So, since the LTTE was crushed earlier this year, more police have been arrested and prosecuted for misconduct.

The police, in turn, have been ordered to crack down on the criminal gangs, who flourished during the last two decades, often by being the paid accomplices of the LTTE. There is also fear that the criminal gangs will get their hands on some of the hidden LTTE weapons, and put them back into circulation. Today alone, troops and police found dozens of bombs, rifles and much ammunition up north. While much of these hidden weapons are found based on tips from Tamils in the camps, other stuff is found simply by examining likely hiding places. The north apparently has over a thousand of these hidden weapons caches.

Much more has been hidden, like secret agents within the government and military. Earlier this month, interrogations of captured LTTE members revealed that the cook (for the last seven years) of the head of the army (general Fonseka, recently promoted to head of the armed forces) was an LTTE agent. Several other well placed agents have been revealed, and there are apparently dozens more who are still in place (and no doubt trying to figure out how to flee the country).

August 29, 2009: In the north, troops searching for weapons, uncovered a hidden warehouse containing 140 landmines, and many other weapons.

August 25, 2009: Police discovered LTTE weapons, and a suicide bomber vest, apparently intended for use against the president's brother, who is also an official in the defense ministry. The members of this terrorist cell escaped capture, and the police fear there is more than one such group in the capital. Assassination attempts against senior officials usually take months to plan and prepare. It's unknown if this attempt was in the works for a while, or was being hastily put together by one of the many groups of LTTE killers now on their own, since the LTTE high command has been, for all intents and purposes, put out of action for the moment. There is no one at the top of the LTTE chain of command, issuing orders. So hundreds of small (no more than a dozen) groups of LTTE members are trying to reform the organization, and avoid capture.

August 23, 2009: In the north, police found four "suicide bomber kits", which had apparently been hidden, for later use, after the LTTE was driven out of the area.

August 21, 2009: Sri Lanka is establishing a school to train foreign troops in counter-terrorist methods developed during the years of fighting the LTTE. The Pakistani government made the initial request for this kind of training, but Sri Lanka found that several other nations were also interested. The Sri Lankan defeat of the LTTE was a rather complex process, not just a final, massive, military campaign. Military professionals recognize that, and want to learn the details of how the Sri Lankans did it.

August 20, 2009: The new commander (as of last month) of the army, lieutenant general Jagath Jayasuriya, has cancelled his predecessors plans to expand the military 50 percent. There will still be some expansion, but only a few thousand troops, and these will be commando and intelligence units needed to find and run down the remaining LTTE terrorists. More troops are being put to work clearing the LTTE mines and booby traps that cover much of the north, making many towns and villages uninhabitable until the devices are cleared.

August 15, 2009: Acting on a tip from a captured LTTE man, police found a 45 pound bomb hidden in a culvert outside the central Sri Lankan city of Mahiyangana. The bomb was defused and removed.

August 12, 2009: Police captured three more LTTE members who were making preparations for terror attacks. Although the senior LTTE leadership is dead, or fled, many lower ranking leaders are still around, and some of these are trying to organize more attacks.

August 10, 2009: Police seized a van full of bombs, (twenty eleven pound Claymore mines), that were headed for the capital to be used in suicide attacks. Elsewhere in the north, troops found six suicide boats, packed with nearly a ton of explosives. Many small caches of weapons (rifles, grenades, machine-guns, ammo) are being found. There are apparently many more to be discovered.

Really disappointing Strategypage...

You evidently didn't read the article, Kardinal.  The Eurolefties are doing their usual song and dance, condemning every harsh glance by the Sri Lankan government as a "war crime", whilst muttering, "LTTE terrorism?  What terrorism?  They're just a bunch of progressive freedom fighters!"

This time, though the pig tranzies are going to get slapped hard enough to loosen teeth.  Sri Lanka itself has but little weight in international politics...but behind them is the PRC, and India hoping to ward China off.

The answer to your question lies in this paragraph

"The government is pretty angry at the criticism it gets by European and American politicians and media, over the treatment of the northern Tamils. Many prominent Europeans want the Tamils in refugee camps released immediately, and Sri Lankan security forces prosecuted for war crimes. This sort of thing enrages the Sinhalese majority in Sri Lanka, and results in accusations that these foreign critics are a bunch of pro-terrorist, delusional, racists (who imply that the Sri Lankans cannot govern themselves)."

Western Governments are supposed to be run by intelligent people. They are fully aware that a large number of terrorists who are trained to kill indiscriminately are hiding in these camps. The necessity of weeding out these terrorists before they get out and severely compromise the safety of 20 million living in Sri Lanka is not lost on them.

Instead of providing support to alleviate the living conditions of the IDP population and helping the Govt to carry out what is essential (weeding out the terrorists) they are using economic, HR issues and threats of war crime prosecutions to pressure the Govt.

The USA operated Internment camps where over a 100,000 US citizens of Japanese Origin were "Rounded Up" from their homes overnight and kept in worse conditions than in SL for over 3 years. Over half of them were Children. The Australians did the same thing in WW1 and WW2.

The USA currently operates Guantanamo where prisoners are chained and have to be supported physically by two guards even to walk. It has been going on since 2002. The European Govts are not doing anything about that either.

The British Police shot a Brazilian Electrician in the British Underground (actually emptied his gun at the head). The British police reacted in this way because the British public was exposed to a FEW bombs (in comparison to SL). The British also depopulated (forcibly evicted) Chagosians from Diego Garcia just to get Polaris missiles at a $15 million discount. The Chagosians won in British courts but that was subverted by the use of "Crown Prerogative"

In Canada there was the infamous "Boarding Schools" were children "Snatched" from there parents were forcibly kept for years. Even a film was made depicting the true story of Two (?) girls whose indomitable desire to get back to their parents were poignantly portrayed. Today the First Nation people are trying to get justice under signed Treaties

The Iraq war was illegal as it was opposed by the UN. Today we know that WMD was a fabrication by the USA and the UK. How many Cruise Missiles were launched at Iraq? How many civilians killed? How many of them were women and children? It is known that the US and UK forces cut off food and water to Baghdad. It is also known that they actively prevented access to the Hospitals in Baghdad to the civil population. Any call for war crime investigations?

Then comes Abu Ghraib and the torture of prisnors , was there a cover up to protect top politicians and Army top brass?  Any Impartial International Inquiry to find out? Was it a lesser war than in Sri Lanka?

In simple terms the practice of ?Double Standards?, one for the Europeans and another for the rest of the world ?Is Racist?
I, too, can only brook so much hypocrisy.

It is nice to see there are third party media, which are not slaves of western powers. Most of the international media, such as BBC, CNN and AP are speakers of Amrican and European powers. They see and say only what western wants to. But strategy page has looked into this matter with an open and realistic eye.

In a way it is pathetic how western powers are controlled by pro-LTTE forces in europe. Shame on those hypocratics.

Equal Justice, appreciate your comment. I can't do better.

As long as Sri Lanka have the ears of India and China ready at hand, they can just snub at the European and American media.  I would criticize the Western policymakers based on their constant desire to want to play the game of moral high-ground, but do not have the balls to actually do what it takes to be on moral high-ground.  A bunch of affluent and silly hypocritical bunch of bags filled with words and not much else.

To clarify, I agree about the double standard thing (although I've read enough articles in the French press that did portray the LTTE as the thugs they are to make that sort of broad strokes painting a bit caricatural) - is it limited to European countries though ?
And more to the point, the word "racism" has lost much of its meaning through misuse, including this case : how would supporting a faction of brown people aginst another faction of brown people... be racist ?
I only wish for lexical accuracy here. If SP really did want to keep the anti-European bias at least they could use a title that makes sense. "European hypocrits" would do better, for eg.

Le Zookeeper    Some background info   8/31/2009 4:42:38 AM
The Tamils are Indo-Dravidians, (the darker brown skinned) while the buddhist majority Sinhalese are a bit different in features. To be fair the support USA gives to Israel against the various Arabs is a similar situation to what the Europeans are doing in supporting the Tamils against majority Buddhists (so I guess we can accuse US of racism in the Middle East, hey at least we are open about tossing the Khans, etc in the corner room at airports).
The parallels(too Jews in Europe) are very significant as the Tamils are the more educated of the lot (they formed the backbone of the INdia civil service under the British, and now interestingly are the backbone of the Indian nuclear establishment).  In a world full of inequities its a pleasant surprise to see the Europeans react as they did including Canada which allowed tons of Tamil refugees and political asylum seekers. Italy too is oddly home to a bunch.  Its actually healthy to see EU behave as the alleged "racists" that they are and notice the heightened sensitivities in the various brown skinned groups; after all the last time some European threw in a few hundred thousand jews in internment camps the results were very unpleasant. As always its inhuman to put people in these camps for any reason at all.

Le Zookeeper    Maligning of legitimate Tamil aspirations   8/31/2009 4:50:31 AM
No support for LTTE here but the real thugs are the Buddhist machismo right (odd set of paradoxial words). The Tamil are a proud free educated civilzed religious people who had a legitimate gripe against the Sinhalese as much as Israel has a right to exist(the analogy is so apt). I can hardly understand some of the posts here. What if we tossed a whole jewish neighbourhood in France in an internment camp, hey horrors do it in Germany to hunt down the financial crooks, some of these bonds must be run by the jewish illumanti- jeez!! Mass internment is wrong. Its Nazi behaviour.

Humans shields, child soldiers, suicide bombers, the killing of elected Tamil politicians - including Sri Lankan cabinet ministers.  It's funny how the "proud free educated civilized religious" LTTE killed more Tamils than anyone else in their "legitimate gripe against the Sinhalese".

In certain elites in Europe it is still quite fashionable to "flirt" with Che Guevara like ideology or should I say "freedom struggles". They have absolutely no problem with the fact that masses of "colored people" (and poor whites) are sacrified on the "altar" of these "ideals".

The racism being that if a member from their elite is doing the dieing, they instantly condemn the "freedom fighters". This happens everytime when a "noble Che Guevara" chooses to kill a journalist. Then and only then are these guys recieving any critcism.
