The number of kidnappings continues to increase, with over a hundred people a month being grabbed. But there's another trend as well, kidnappings combined with political killings. Four kidnap victims have been killed so far, the latest, journalist Jacques Roche, was tortured and killed even after his ransom had been paid. His captors made it clear that Roche was killed because of his reporting. An active journalist in Haiti is going to offend one armed group or another. Roche was believed to have been killed by a pro-Aristide gang.
