Israel: August 27, 2000


A bomb was found, and detonated, in West Jerusalem. Earlier, Israeli commandoes attempted to capture a top Hamas leader. In the ensuing gunfire, three Israeli soldiers were killed and another wounded by friendly fire. Two Hamas members were captured, but the Hamas leader (Abu Hanoud) got away, and was later arrested by Palestinian police. Several hundred Israeli troops were involved in the raid.
