The Palestinians belonged to the Syrian backed PFLP-GC  (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command) and had men from this group had not been seen in the area since Israel withdrew from south Lebanon last Summer. Both sides are under a lot of pressure to work out a mutually acceptable deal before the Israeli February 6 elections (which are likely to put a more anti-peace government in power.)
