Despite efforts by Palestinian and Israeli officials to work out a ceasefire, daily suicide attacks on Israeli civilians makes it difficult to get the backing of Israeli voters. A truce without a halt to attacks on Israeli civilians would not work, and would not be much of a truce. The death toll is up to 1,576 (1,197 Palestinian and 355 Israeli.)
