The High Court has, for the first time, called a halt to the proceedings of a Sharia (Islamic law) court in the north. The defendant was facing death by stoning. But people in the north are reacting violently to such federal intervention and it is feared that this could lead to civil war. The federal government is under a lot of international pressure to stop Sharia courts from executing women for adultery.
