Nigeria: November 23, 2002


  The Miss World contestants were flown out of Nigeria, thus completing the humiliation of Nigeria's image. The original idea was to stage the widely televised event in Nigeria to show the world what a wonderful place Nigeria was. And help encourage investment and tourism. But this ignored the fact that Nigeria was still mired in corruption, crime and growing religious violence. Now the world knows. Not quite the image the government wanted to project, but a more accurate one.
