A quarter of the 240 policemen killed in the past year, died dealing with tribal and religious fighting in central and northern Nigeria. The army has been brought into these areas to discourage civilians from resorting to violence. But the tensions remain. However, this should be put in perspective. Each year, several hundred thousand Nigerians die from Malaria and other tropical diseases. .
