Sri Lanka: January 22, 2000


  Fighting in the north left seven LTTE rebels dead. During a major search operation in the capital, during the curfew hours, some 3,000 people were detained. Some 5,000 police and soldiers were involved. Most were quickly released, but over 200 were held for further questioning. The curfew was imposed to facilitate the search.
