In the last day they held the Elephant Pass base, government forces lost 79 dead and 625 wounded, mostly from LTTE mortars and artillery. It was only four years ago that the army cleared the LTTE out of the Jaffna peninsula. But since then the LTTE has improved their weaponry and tactics while the army has gotten sloppy.
