Sudan: Arms Embargo Ignored

August 27, 2007: The Sudan government continues to dismiss claims by the UN and NGOs that the Sudanese government was continuing to break the UN resolution imposing an arms embargo on the Darfur region. UN Resolution 1591 (March 2005) imposed an embargo "on all parties" in Darfur. The UN and NGO evidence includes photos and videos, but the government just denies everything and does nothing about it.

August 22, 2007: The government had failed to meet the deadline for redeploying Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) units in south Sudan. For several months the government of south Sudan had been complaining that the central government was not moving its units out of the region in accordance with the January 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

August 21, 2007: The UN once more accused government supported militias in Darfur of rape and abduction. The UN was responding to reports that 50 women were abducted from the town of Deribat (South Darfur) in December 2006. The women were then "forced into sexual slavery." The women were members of the Fur tribe. Two militia groups were identified as participating in several attacks: the Popular Defense Forces militia and the "Abu Gasim Faction."
