Sudan: January 15, 2001

The Sudanese government (Khartoum) claimed its forces killed 630 rebels and wounded another 1,500 in a series of clashes in the Aweil and Lol regions (Bahr el-Ghazal state). The government report alleged that most of the killed and wounded rebels were guerrillas fighting with the SPLA. A government source said 450 AK-47s were captured. A late report said the rebels were pulling out of Bahr el-Ghazal in the wake of the defeat.
