US and French engineers are upgrading Manas International Airport (near Bishkek, Kyrgystan) for use as a temporary NATO military airfield. Once operational (by the end of February) this will be home to 3,000 Americans (with 30-40 F-18 and F-15 fighters) and 500 French personnel (with a small squadron of Mirage-2000Ds).--Stephen V Cole
