Thousands of Chadians have moved across the border to live in the Central African Republic (CAR). While this got them away from civil war violence in Chad, it exposed them to the rampant banditry in the CAR. In the last month, some 60 Chadian farmers have been killed in bandit raids. CAR officials say the upsurge in violence is partially attributable to raids by Chadian nomads against CAR farmers. The CAR has been setting up military garrisons in the area, using money and weapons from France. But this is mostly to keep the bandits from raiding truck traffic on the roads.
