Chad: Let's Hear It For Senseless Violence

Archives

July 13, 2007: Over 20,000 Chadian Arabs have moved into Darfur, to escape raids by Chadian African tribal militias. These armed groups are retaliating because of the raids by Sudanese and Chadian Arab tribal militias. These Arab groups are supported by the Sudanese government, which is run by the Sudanese Arabs. So far this year, these raids have caused over 120,000 people, most of them non-Arab, in eastern Chad to flee their homes. Peace talks have gone nowhere, and Chad continues to refuse permission for European peacekeepers to impose order in the east. Chad's armed forces are unable to stop the raiding, and the government fears that letting foreign troops in will spark a wider civil war.
