China has recently purged a few senior academics who have published pro-Western papers. In a throwback to traditional purge techniques, articles have been published criticizing some of them for failure to follow Marxist tenets. The Communist Party is concerned that recent sharp changes may make it hard to retain power. Sixty percent of Chinese industrial production is now in companies not owned by the government.--Stephen V Cole
