China: June 7, 2002

Word quickly spread (over the Internet, then the government media) about how 500 students at a police academy in eastern China attacked a nearby liberal arts university because of a dispute over a basketball game. The government tried to ban all reporting of this incident, as it fed public fear of police corruption and brutality. Over a hundred riot police were called in to deal with the rioting police cadets. The government denied that riot police were sent to deal with the police riot the government denies ever happened.
