An army patrol shot it out with rebels outside Medelin, but 30 children on a hike were caught in the cross fire and six were killed. One of the adults with the children said he did not see any rebels. It's possible that nervous troops opened fire when they saw people hiking up ahead and then interpreted echoes of their gunfire as rebels shooting at them. .
