A continuing investigation of arms smuggling has revealed the numerous ways FARC has obtained weapons. In 1997-98, FARC members entered the United States, bought many weapons and then shipped them back to Colombia as machinery parts. Other weapons were obtained from Brazilians in exchange for cocaine. Corrupt Peruvian officials brokered a shipment of 10,000 AK-47s from Jordan. Last year, the FARC outbid the AUC for a large quantity of Chinese weapons from a dealer in Suriname.
