Last year, leftist rebels attacked the country's largest oil pipeline 170 times, which kept the pipeline closed 75 percent of the time. The government is asking the US for assistance in guarding the pipeline, which provides a major chunk of the nation's export revenue. The FARC and ELN attack the pipeline for that reason, to deny the government money with which to operate.
