 FARC is apparently trying to build a new "demilitarized zone" in the south of the country by intimidating local mayors and government officials to do FARCs bidding. Dozens of mayors and officials are fleeing their towns because of the FARC threats. Fourteen mayors have been killed already, and 16 kidnapped. The government is trying to provide protection for the mayors, in the form of armored cars and bodyguards.
