The government believes at least a thousand leftist FARC and ELN rebels are living in 19 camps across the border in Venezuela, along with several hundred AUC militiamen who attack these camps. The leftist rebels are holding several dozen of their kidnap victims in their Venezuelan camps. It is believed that the leftist rebels also help train leftist irregulars loyal to the unpopular leftist president of Venezuela; Hugo Chavez.
