President Uribe is putting leftists in Europe, and elsewhere in Latin America, on the spot. Uribes energetic moves against the leftist rebels that have terrorized all of Colombia for decades has made him enormously popular. But European and Latin American leftists find it hard to admit that the leftist FARC and ELN have gone bad and the majority Colombian people want peace and freedom to move and life freely in their own country. The Colombian leftists don't help much by responding with an indiscriminate bombing campaign, in an attempt to terrorize the population into not supporting the government.
