The FARC campaign against the nations 1100 mayors has resulted in death threats against half of them. Eight mayors have been murdered by the FARC this year, and 63 since 1998. The rebels believe that if they can control the mayors, they can control the country. But the vast majority of the mayors have resisted the rebels.
