India-Pakistan: October 19, 2001

Archives

The US has told Pakistan that it will be conducting hit and run raids into Afghanistan from bases in Pakistan. Pakistan has not objected. The US is also using an air base in Oman for this. Pakistani officials are increasing their security measures to limit future anti-American demonstrations. But public opinion in Pakistan is slowly moving against the American operations. Part of this shift is the increasing number of Afghan refugees entering the country. Afghan refugees are seen as a major cause of crime and economic problems in Pakistan. In Kashmir, Indian artillery fire across the Line of Control left four Pakistani civilians dead. Rebel violence left seven rebels  and six civilians dead. So far this year, 470 Kashmir rebels have been killed, most of them while crossing the Line of Control. Anti-American protests continued in Kashmir.
