The newly elected head of the Kashmir government (Mufti Mohammed Sayeed) vows to obtain more autonomy for Kashmir and more control over police and military operations in the area. Political activists will be freed from prison and administrative reforms undertaken. 

 In Kashmir, rebel violence left five dead. Rebels have made numerous attacks on members of the new government, feeling that the popularly elected officials enact reforms, it will diminish the popularity of the rebels.
