India is giving Nepal $26 million worth of small arms and ammunition. Like the British army, Gurkha (Nepalese) battalions also serve in the Indian army. India has a long, close relationship with Nepal and is backing the monarchy against communist rebels, and to encourage the government to crack down on Pakistani attempts to infiltrate its agents into India via Nepal.

In Kashmir, several rebel attacks left 18 dead and over fifty wounded. Indian and Pakistani artillery exchanged fire along the Line of Control, leaving a Pakistani civilian dead.
