In North Waziristan (northwest Pakistan), along the Afghan border, a pro-government tribal chief was killed by a roadside bomb. In Baluchistan  (southwest Pakistan), tribal gunmen and soldiers ended a month long standoff along a road. The government said it would negotiate with the tribes, but would not remove troops from the area until peace was assured.
