President Wahid backed off from declaring a state of emergency (so that he could suspend parliament and stop legislators from impeaching him.) Wahid is hoping for a compromise, but his opponents do not seem interested. Five rebel negotiators in Aceh were arrested for not recognizing their Indonesian citizenship. The government had suspended negotiations and launched military attacks on rebels instead.
