Indonesia: June 11, 2002


 Papuans are complaining that Islamic militants (from Laskar Jihad) and the military are arming and training Christian settlers to resist attempts by the largely Christian Papuans to set up a separate Papuan state. But the local Papuans are split by tribalism (over a hundred tribes) and lower levels of education than Islamic settlers from other parts of Indonesia.

Violence in Aceh left a local politician dead, killed by two men believed to be rebels.
