The Aceh rebels are thought to be holding 38 civilian hostages, although the rebels will only admit to having a TV camera crew of five people. The other hostages are supposed to be mostly village chiefs. The military says it has killed 403 rebels so far, while 319 have been captured and another 325 have surrendered. Thirty soldiers and nine police have died in the operation so far. There are some 30,000 troops and 10,000 police operating in Aceh.
