Israel believes that it is possible to work out a peace deal with the Palestinians before Bill Clinton leaves office on January 20, 2001. Clinton is eager to make his mark on Middle Eastern history and outgoing Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak is a long shot for re-election next Spring and is also under pressure to make a lasting deal with the Palestinians before leaving office.
