North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il made a secret visit to Beijing on 29-30 May, apparently to secure Chinese support before the historic summit between North Korea and South Korea in mid-June. Visits abroad by Kim Jong-il are extremely rare. The Chinese are known to want control over peninsular politics, and to be concerned that the Korean summit might not follow Beijing's script.--Stephen V Cole
