Korea: September 12, 2002


So far this year, 729 North Korean refugees have managed to make it to South Korea via China (by sneaking into embassies and claiming political asylum). For all of 2002, only 583 made. But there has been a cost, as thousands of North Koreans in China have been rounded up and sent back to North Korea, where many die in police custody or labor camps.
