Most Liberians appear to support the continuation of the UN arms embargo on Liberia. Outsiders listening to local talk radio and opinions expressed on the street have made it clear that many, if not most, Liberians see no need for additional arms. Charles Taylor, the current president, is a long time friend of Sierra Leone rebel leader Foday Sankoh and has operated the same way, mixing banditry with revolution. Liberians are afraid that Taylors government is turning into the same kind of corrupt dictatorship that Liberia has had in the past.
