Nepal: April 9, 2005

Several hundred Maoist rebels attacked an army base in the northwest, but were repulsed. Over a hundred rebels were killed, along with three soldiers. There were many more wounded. The high rebel casualties were largely result of their using kidnapped, and indoctrinated teenagers, for this kind of fighting. The kids are not very experienced, but are enthusiastic, especially those in their first combat action. The soldiers are older, trained and more experienced.

Across the country, police arrested several hundred demonstrators, who were protesting the kings removal of elected officials from the government.
