 Troops attacked a hundred Abu Sayyaf rebels on the island of Pilas, where the rebels had come from the nearby island of Jolo. Four rebels and two troops were killed. The rebels had stopped at Pilas, on their way to Basilan. The rebels had left Jolo because they feared a coming joint Filipino-American operations would locate them.

In the south, an MILF ambush left two soldiers and a civilian dead.
