Soldiers were placed on alert to deal with widespread rumors that another coup was going to be attempted. The current government has many enemies among the wealthy families. The government's prosecution of wealthy suspects for corruption is caused unease at the top, and some rich and powerful people are known to be indulging in the old practice of putting a lot of officers and troops on their private payroll. But president Arroyo enjoys widespread popularity with the troops, and no one, it is thought, can afford to bribe the majority of the armed forces.
