Archives

October 21, 2006: The army is sending another 1,500 troops to Sulu island, where there are already 6,000 troops looking for members of Abu Sayyaf. The terrorist group is energetically trying to make and set off bombs, but has had limited success because of a shortage of bomb making materials, and personnel skilled at making and deploying the bombs.

October 20, 2006: The military will expand by 3,000 troops, to 121,000. Another 9,000 paramilitary village guards will be recruited as well. The extra manpower will largely be deployed against the NPA, a 7,000 member communist rebel group.

October 17, 2006: In the south, police seized half a ton of bomb making materials.

October 16, 2006: As the evidence piles up, that MILF members are involved with the recent terrorist bombings, the government has indicted 21 MILF members, including the head of the MILF, on murder charges, for deaths related to recent bombings. The MILF insists that the people involved in terrorism are renegade MILF, not anyone under their control.

October 15, 2006: A bomb went off inside a military camp on Jolo, causing three injuries. Police found and defused another bomb, in a Christian neighborhood in the south.

October 14, 2006: Another 45 people have been charged with rebellion, for their participation in the failed coup last February. Those charged included army and police officials, both active and retired, as well as some politicians.
