Fog, and Chechens desperate to get out of their shrinking positions in Grozny, have produced a nightmare for Russian infantry. A foggy night full of resourceful and fearless Chechens has produced high casualties on both sides. But the Chechens in particularly have been taking a beating. Much Russian firepower and few Chechen medical resources have reduced the number of active Chechen fighters in the city to under a thousand. In past wars, the Chechens have run out of fighters before the Russians did. But that was before mass media, so this time around the Russians cannot afford to take as many losses as they did in the past to subdue the rebels. The Chechens. are aware of this and it keeps them going.
