Eyewitness accounts of the March 2nd battle that left scores of Russians dead indicate that at least twenty Russians were killed by friendly fire. In the confused action, one group of Russians were mistaken for Chechens and hit with heavy fire from nearby Russian units. Such incidents are not unknown in modern warfare, although more commonly the friendly fire is from warplanes or artillery.
