Some 3,000 paratroopers were flown to the high ground above the village of Shatoi in southern Chechnya. Shatoi is a rebel stronghold. Bislan Gantamirov, the head of the pro-Russian Chechen militia and currently police chief of Grozny, has severed relations with Russia over a dispute on how to pacify the province.
