Two suicide bombers in a car full of explosives were stopped at a checkpoint in Chechnya. They detonated the bomb, killing themselves and two policemen. Some 13 kilometers east of Grozny, a hundred rebels attacked the village of Argun, resulting a several hours of combat with Russian troops. Meanwhile, in Grozny, a Muslim cleric, Mufti Akhmad-Khadja Kadyrov was appointed to lead the government in Chechnya. The mufti is the senior religious official in the province. His willingness to work with the Russians has already made him and members of his family victims of several assassination attempts. Appointing the mufti was seen as a way of uniting the many Chechens who want peace and are opposed to continued armed resistance.
