A rebel ambush in Chechnya left eleven soldiers dead and 18 wounded. A group rebels, surrounded by Russian troops in the southeast, continues to fight. Over half the rebel force of some 250 men has been killed in a week of action. The Russians say they have lost 49 soldiers. Commanders in Chechnya feel there are only 1,200-1,800 armed rebels still active in Chechnya.
