Russia: October 21, 2000


In eastern Chechnya, rebels ambushed a police patrol, killing three and wounding two policemen. In Georgia, border police say they stopped armed Chechens who had slipped past Russian border guards. There are thousands of Chechen refugees living in Georgia, providing bases for rebels. The Russian border police, which have gone to great lengths to seal the border, say they saw no signs of Chechens trying to cross recently.
