Georgia sent about a thousand troops into the Pankisi Gorge. The area contains about 5,000 Chechen refugees. The native population of the gorge is 7,000 people (2,000 Georgians, and 5,000 Kistins, an ethnic group related to Chechens). The Georgians have had several fights with non-Georgian minorities, and have lost most of those battles.
