In Chechnya, twenty Su-24 and Su-25 warplanes were used to attack a force of 500 rebels that were trying to take over two villages in the south. Another fight took place in the western Chechnya with a force of 40 rebels. There were casualties in both actions, but these were apparently not high.

The armed forces is cutting it's strength by 100,000 men this year, bringing total strength down to about a million. By 2007, the army expects to have an all-volunteer force of 166,000 troops, while the rest of the armed forces depends on conscripts for over half their manpower.
