In the past year, 1,200 Russian soldiers died in accidents, and another 2,500 were injured. This included off-duty incidents, but not combat operations in Chechnya. This non-combat injury rate is several times that of Western armed forces. The data may have been released to provide another argument for the abolition of conscription and adoption of an all volunteer, and more professional, military force.
