In Chechnya, the rebels have been caught paying children as young as ten to plant roadside mines. In one case, the kids made a mistake putting the mine in the ground and it went off. More of the rebels have been working as gangsters than anti-Russian fighters. But no matter what individual Chechens think, the criminal gangs are so numerous and ruthless that all you can do is keep your head down and hope for the best.
